Behind every great player is a coach who believes in them. At PSM Icehouse, our coaching staff is dedicated to building not just better hockey players, but more confident and capable individuals. In this series, we highlight the people who make that impact every day on the ice.
Coach Spotlight: Cam Wirick
Head Coach | Fort Wayne Spacemen Premier
Hockey Director | PSM Icehouse
At PSM Icehouse, player development is built on detail, structure, and a commitment to helping athletes improve every time they step on the ice. That approach is led by Cameron Wirick.
As Hockey Director and Head Coach of the Fort Wayne Spacemen Premier team, Cam plays a central role in shaping the development pathway at Icehouse. From youth programs to junior hockey, his focus is consistent. Helping players understand the game, build confidence, and develop habits that lead to long-term success.
A Lifelong Connection to the Game
Cam’s introduction to hockey started at home, where his dad first introduced him to the game and coached him in his early years at McMillen.
That early experience sparked a journey that took him well beyond Fort Wayne. Hockey brought opportunities to play in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and a call-up experience in the NAHL, exposing him to different levels of competition and environments.
Ultimately, the game brought him back to Fort Wayne, where he helped win a National Championship with Indiana Tech and transitioned into coaching and leadership roles within the sport.
A Coach Focused on Details and Development
Cam’s coaching philosophy centers around intention and understanding. Every drill, every rep, and every practice is designed with a purpose.
“The ‘why’ behind a drill is what is key.”
Players are not just taught what to do. They are taught how to apply skills in real game situations and why those details matter.
This approach helps players:
- Develop a deeper understanding of the game
- Build confidence through repetition and clarity
- Apply skills under pressure
- Stay patient and committed to the process
Building Players at Every Level
Cam’s role across both youth and junior hockey gives him a unique perspective on development.
On the youth side, he focuses on progression. Helping players work through challenges and build confidence as they develop new skills.
At the junior level with the Spacemen, his focus expands to preparation and performance. Video breakdowns, practice planning, and pre-scouting all contribute to building a competitive and disciplined team environment.
This combination allows him to guide players through every stage of their hockey journey.
What Separates Good from Great
For Cam, the difference comes down to attention to detail.
“The small details are important in today’s game.”
At higher levels, players already have skill. What separates them is how consistently they execute the little things. Stick positioning, communication, awareness, and readiness all play a role in performance.
These habits are built daily and reinforced through structured coaching.
Why Icehouse Hockey Works
At PSM Icehouse, development is driven by the people behind the bench.
Cam sees the coaching staff as the foundation of what makes the program successful. A group that brings different experiences and perspectives, all aligned around helping players grow.
“The people make it special.”
Curating Player Development at Icehouse
As Hockey Director, Cameron Wirick plays a key role in shaping how players develop at PSM Icehouse.
His focus is on creating a structured environment where players can consistently build skills, apply them in game situations, and continue progressing over time. That means designing programs that work together, not in isolation, so players can stay on the ice, reinforce habits, and make meaningful gains.
“The variety of camps we have this year is something we have not seen at the Icehouse in years.”
That approach carries into this year’s development lineup, where players have access to a range of training opportunities including Core Skills Hockey Camp, Battle Camp with Kaleigh Schrock, Elite Goalie Camp with Mike Melnikov, and specialty camps featuring Swaggy P, Pete Lenes.
By offering multiple touchpoints throughout the year, players can stack their development, staying consistent on the ice and accelerating their growth through repetition, detail, and competition.
What Players Can Expect on the Ice
Every session with Cam is built around effort, attitude, and purpose.
Players can expect a high-tempo environment where they are encouraged to stay engaged, compete, and support their teammates.
“As long as players show up ready to put the work in and be positive, they will have fun and develop.”
Moments That Stick
One of Cam’s most meaningful hockey memories comes from winning a National Championship at Indiana Tech. A team built on trust, commitment, and full buy-in.
That experience continues to shape how he approaches building culture within his teams today.
Lessons That Carry Beyond the Game
Cam believes in leading by example and setting a standard through action. It is a simple principle that carries into every aspect of his coaching.
“You cannot tell someone to do something if you are not doing it too.”
