Learn to Skate USA Membership

All skaters in our Learn to Skate programs must have an active Learn to Skate USA membership ($20/year)—required for first-timers and returning skaters alike.

Parent + Tot Learn to Skate USA

Class Overview

Make their first skating experience a memorable one—together. Our Parent/Tot class is a great way to introduce young children to the ice with the comfort and support of a parent or adult by their side.

Designed for children ages 2–5 with no prior skating experience, this class focuses on building confidence, coordination, and basic skating skills in a fun and supportive environment. A participating adult must be able to skate and will accompany the child on the ice.

Each session includes 30 minutes of professional instruction followed by 10 minutes of practice time. The program emphasizes fundamental movement skills and physical literacy through age-appropriate activities.

Snowplow Sam 2-4

Get your little one started on the ice! Our Snowplow Sam 2–4 classes are the perfect way to introduce preschoolers to skating in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Class Overview

Designed for children ages 3 to 5, Snowplow Sam 2–4 builds confidence through engaging activities and age-appropriate games. These beginner sessions help young skaters develop balance, coordination, and basic skating skills. With a curriculum tailored to preschoolers, kids will learn how to fall safely, get up on their own, and move confidently on the ice—all while having fun. Each class encourages exploration, growth, and a love for skating that can last a lifetime.

Basic Skills 1-4

Ready to take your skating to the next level? Our Basic Skills 1–4 classes are perfect for beginners and developing skaters of all ages.

Class Overview

Our Basic Skills 1–4 program is designed to help skaters of all ages develop a strong foundation in fundamental skating techniques. Each level introduces and reinforces key elements such as balance, agility, coordination, and speed—essential building blocks for all types of skating, from recreational to competitive figure skating or hockey.

Throughout the program, skaters progress at their own pace in a supportive and inclusive environment. Our professional, certified instructors focus on individual growth, offering personalized guidance to ensure each skater builds confidence as they improve.

In every class, participants will take part in structured exercises, skill-building games, and fun challenges that encourage mastery and movement on the ice. Whether you’re stepping onto the ice for the first time or refining your form, this program lays the groundwork for long-term success and enjoyment in skating.

From learning how to glide forward and stop safely to executing turns and crossovers, Basic Skills 1–4 is the perfect next step in any skater’s journey.

It’s never too late to learn to skate! Our Teen–Adult 1–4 classes are perfect for skaters aged 13 and up, whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills.

Class Overview

Our Teen–Adult 1–4 classes are thoughtfully designed for skaters aged 13 and up, whether you’re lacing up for the first time or returning to the ice to sharpen your technique. Held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, each session provides a welcoming, inclusive environment where skaters of all levels can grow at their own pace.

With a strong emphasis on core skating fundamentals—such as balance, posture, control, and coordination—this program helps skaters build confidence and competence on the ice. Classes incorporate progressive skill development, including gliding, stopping, turning, and introductory edge work, all guided by experienced and certified instructors who offer personalized feedback and support.

In addition to technical training, skaters will engage in exercises and drills that promote agility and strength while keeping things fun and motivating. Whether your goal is to pursue figure skating, hockey, or just enjoy a new fitness activity, this class offers the tools, encouragement, and community to help you succeed.

Learn to Skate for Hockey

HOCKEY 1-2

Get ready to take your skating to the next level with our Hockey 1–2 classes! Designed for children who have graduated from Snowplow 4 or higher, these classes focus on building the essential skating skills needed for hockey.

Class Overview

Offered on Mondays and Saturdays, our Hockey 1–2 classes are perfect for young skaters ready to focus on hockey-specific skating techniques. With a curriculum that emphasizes proper form and agility, skaters will develop key skills like the hockey stance, forward and backward strides, knee bend, and balance—all without the use of a puck.

These classes are designed to improve skating proficiency, ensuring that each skater is well-prepared for the exciting world of hockey. Best of all, full gear is not required, making these sessions accessible to all participants. Whether you’re working towards playing hockey or simply refining your skating abilities, this is the perfect next step in your skating journey.

Lead Instructor | Hockey 1–4

Andy Long is leads the Hockey 1–4 program at PSM Icehouse, bringing over 12 years of coaching experience and a passion for developing young players. A Fort Wayne native and former State Champion and team captain at Indiana University Bloomington, Andy focuses on building strong fundamentals, confidence, and a lasting love for the game.

His coaching approach encourages athletes to set goals, embrace hard work, and develop the habits needed to improve both on and off the ice.

Learn to Skate for Hockey

HOCKEY 3-4

Our Hockey 3–4 classes are designed to take your hockey skating skills to the next level! These sessions combine on-ice practice and off-ice training to help young skaters become more proficient, agile, and prepared for the game.

Class Overview

Each class includes a 20-minute off-ice session, a 40-minute on-ice skills session, and a fun 10-minute game. The off-ice portion focuses on warm-up and strengthening exercises, stability, balance, and coordination, followed by a cool-down to enhance flexibility and recovery.

On the ice, participants will refine essential skating techniques like power strides, edge control, and proper posture—crucial skills for hockey success. All drills and exercises are taught without a puck to ensure skaters focus on their skating abilities and technique.

Skate rental is included with your registration fee, and participants must have completed Hockey 2 or Basic 2 in the Learn to Skate USA program to advance to the Hockey 3–4 level. Full hockey gear is required for these classes to ensure safety and readiness for game situations.

Equipment Requirement

Players enrolled in Hockey 3–4 are required to wear full hockey equipment to participate safely on the ice. Full gear helps players build confidence while learning new skills, practicing game situations, and continuing their development in a structured environment.

New to hockey and still getting started? PSM Icehouse offers a free equipment loan program for beginners. Players can borrow a complete set of hockey gear to use during the program and return it once they are ready to purchase their own equipment.

Looking for a unique way to keep your homeschooler active, social, and building lifelong skills? Our Homeschool Learn to Skate program offers a welcoming, structured environment where kids can gain confidence on the ice while having fun. Endorsed by U.S. Figure Skating and USA Hockey, this program is a perfect fit for families seeking enriching daytime physical education.

Class Overview

Includes: 30-minute on-ice lesson, 20-minute practice time, off-ice class, skate rental, and 5 free public skate passes.

  • 11:30 – 11:50 AM: Supervised Practice Time

Boost lessons

Personalized Skating Instruction

Boost Lessons are short, focused 20-minute sessions designed to improve skating skills for all ages and levels, whether you’re into hockey or figure skating. These lessons take place during public or freestyle skating times in a supportive, fun environment.

Who Can Participate?

Boost Lessons are available exclusively to participants in the Learn to Skate USA, Hockey 1-4, or Adult 1-4 programs (including those preparing to join). Lessons are taught only by certified Learn to Skate instructors, with additional options for Pro-Boost Lessons led by professional US Figure Skating certified coaches.

How to Book and Pay

  1. Visit the Coaching Staff page to view available instructors.
  2. Email your preferred instructor or Alena Lunin – Skating Director, to request your lesson.
  3. On the day of your lesson, pay $10 ice time directly to the rink at the front desk and bring your receipt to show your instructor.
  4. Pay the Boost lesson fee directly to your instructor before the session begins.

Boost Lessons (Learn to Skate Instructors)
$22 total: $10 ice time + $12 lesson fee. No limit on the number of lessons

Pro-Boost Lessons (Certified USFS Coaches)
$30 total: $10 ice time + $20 lesson fee. Maximum of 3 lessons per skater

TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE

Our try hockey for free events are designed to provide kids ages 4 to 9 the opportunity to try hockey in a FUN, safe environment with trained coaching staff. No experience is necessary! There will be plenty of assistance on hand to be sure your child has the best first hockey experience and answer any questions you may have.
