Learn. Build. Play. Your Hockey Pathway at PSM Icehouse
As players move through Hockey 3–4, one of the most common questions we hear from families is:
“What comes next?”
At PSM Icehouse, we’ve built a clear development path to help players continue progressing with confidence on the ice.
It comes down to three key steps:
Learn the Game → Build Skills → Play the Game
Each program plays a specific role in helping players grow.
Where It Starts → Hockey 1–4
Every hockey journey at PSM Icehouse follows the Learn to Skate USA program and begins with USA Hockey’s Hockey 1–4.
This stage focuses on building the fundamentals of skating and introducing players to the basics of hockey in a fun, supportive environment.
Players learn:
- Balance, edges, and skating fundamentals
- Basic puck control and coordination
- Confidence moving on the ice
- Introduction to hockey-specific movement and skills
Hockey 1–4 builds the foundation every player needs before progressing into more advanced skill development and game understanding.
It’s where confidence begins and a love for the game takes shape.

League Prep
Hockey League Prep is where players begin to understand how the game actually works.
Many players develop strong skills, but aren’t always sure:
- Where to go on the ice
- How to make decisions
- How to compete in real situations
League Prep bridges that gap by teaching positioning, awareness, and decision-making through a mix of skating, gameplay, and off-ice learning.
Best for players who have developed skills and are ready to understand how to apply them.

Fundamentals
Fundamental Skills & Games focuses on continuing to develop the core skills every player needs.
Players work on:
- Skating with the puck
- Passing and receiving
- Puck control and confidence
- Overall athletic movement
This is a required part of the development pathway and can be taken alongside other programs as players continue to grow.
Best for players continuing to strengthen and refine their skills.

Youth INstructional League
Youth Instructional League is where players begin playing in a structured, team-based environment.
Players:
- Join a team
- Work with a coach
- Play weekly games
- Learn positioning and teamwork in real situations
This is often a player’s first true game experience and a key step toward House League play.
Best for players ready to begin playing in games.
How These Programs Work Together
Every player develops at a different pace, and these programs are designed to support that.
- League Prep helps players understand the game
- Fundamentals builds and reinforces skills
- Youth Instructional League provides real game experience
Players can participate in multiple programs at the same time as they continue to develop. *Players must be enrolled in Hockey 3–4 or Fundamentals to participate in League Prep
Which Program Is Right for Your Player?
If your player is coming out of Hockey 3–4 or continuing through Fundamentals, here’s a simple way to decide:
Need to understand the game? → League Prep
Need to build stronger skills? → Fundamentals
Ready to start playing? → Youth Instructional League
If you’re unsure, our coaching staff is always happy to help guide you to the best fit.
