Summer Never Slows Down at PSM Icehouse: One Building, Countless Ways to Play

For many people, PSM Icehouse is known as Fort Wayne’s home for hockey.

But spend a day at the facility during the summer months and you’ll quickly discover a much bigger story.

On any given day, the building may be home to hockey camps, figure skating lessons, public skating sessions, roller derby athletes, box lacrosse players, and families experiencing the ice for the very first time.

While the sports may look different, they all share the same goal: bringing people together through activity, development, and community.

With more than 3,000 visitors, athletes, and guests coming through the facility during a typical summer month, PSM Icehouse remains one of the most active sports and recreation destinations in the region.

This summer, that activity reaches a peak as PSM Icehouse transitions from camps and daily programming to major events like State Wars, showcasing the versatility of the facility and the many communities it serves.

Hockey Development Takes Center Stage

Summer is an important time for hockey players looking to prepare for the season ahead, and PSM Icehouse offers a variety of opportunities for athletes to continue building their game.

This year’s lineup includes specialty camps led by respected coaches such as Mike Melnikov and Swaggy P, along with programs like the P13 Hockey Camp and the Fort Wayne Spacemen NCDC Main Camp. These opportunities give players access to focused instruction while helping them stay active and engaged throughout the offseason.

"Summer is one of the most important times for player development," said Hockey Director Cam Wirick. "It's an opportunity for players to focus on individual skill development, build confidence, and work on areas of their game that can be difficult to address during a busy season. Those small improvements made over the summer often have a big impact once the season starts."

Throughout the summer, players of all ages continue to take advantage of camps, clinics, private instruction, and drop-in opportunities designed to help them build confidence and improve their game.

Figure Skaters Keep Moving Forward

The summer schedule isn’t just busy for hockey players.

Figure skaters continue training through camps, lessons, Learn to Skate programs, and private coaching opportunities designed to help athletes develop year-round.

Whether working toward competitive goals or simply building confidence on the ice, skaters continue to find opportunities to learn, grow, and stay connected to the sport throughout the summer months.

These programs ensure athletes can continue progressing while preparing for the upcoming season.

More Than Ice: Roller Derby & Box Lacrosse

While hockey and skating remain central to the facility’s identity, PSM Icehouse is also home to a variety of sports that bring entirely different communities into the building.

This spring and summer, Fort Wayne Roller Derby returned to PSM Icehouse for a series of exciting bouts that showcased the speed, athleticism, and passion of the local roller derby community.

At the same time, the facility continues to host Box Lacrosse, one of the fastest-growing sports in North America. The league provides local athletes with another opportunity to compete, train, and stay active throughout the summer.

Together, these programs demonstrate the versatility of the facility and help create opportunities for athletes with a wide range of interests and backgrounds.

A Place for Families & First-Time Participants

Not every visitor arrives with competitive goals.

Throughout the summer, public skating sessions and Learn to Skate programs continue welcoming new participants to the facility.

For some, it may be their first time stepping onto the ice. For others, it’s a chance to enjoy time with family and friends in a fun and active environment.

These programs play an important role in introducing new people to skating and helping grow participation across all ice sports.

Summer Continues at PSM Icehouse

The summer schedule doesn’t slow down anytime soon.

The season has already featured a wide range of programming and events, from Fort Wayne Roller Derby bouts and the Fort Wayne Ice Skating Club’s Grease on Ice production to specialty hockey camps, figure skating camps, sports & Cosmic Glow Camps and daily public programming.

In the weeks ahead, PSM Icehouse will continue to host camps, clinics, tournaments, and special events, including:

The facility also continues to serve as a gathering place for the community through events like the Rolling for Rowan Charity Roller Hockey Tournament , the 4th Annual Play Like Bray Memorial Game, and the Battle of Fort Wayne Adult Hockey Tournament. Together, these events bring athletes and families together through competition, community, and meaningful causes while showcasing the many ways Icehouse serves participants of all ages.

One of the biggest events of the year arrives in July when State Wars returns to Fort Wayne. The national roller hockey championship will transform the facility, converting all three surfaces into roller hockey rinks and welcoming teams, athletes, and families from across North America for nearly two weeks of competition.

Following State Wars, ice programming returns in August, bringing hockey, skating, clinics, and public programming back to the facility as preparations begin for the fall season.

Whether you’re stepping onto the ice for the first time, attending a community event, developing your skills, or competing at a high level, there is always something happening at PSM Icehouse.

One Building, Many Stories

What makes PSM Icehouse special isn’t just the variety of sports that happen within its walls. It’s the people who bring the building to life every day.

That sense of community extends well beyond any single program.

"What makes PSM Icehouse special is the variety of people who walk through our doors. On any given day, you'll see athletes at every stage of their journey, from first-time skaters and recreational participants to competitive players and elite athletes. We take a lot of pride in being a place where so many different sports and communities can come together under one roof."

On any given day, you might find a goalie working with a camp instructor, a figure skater practicing a routine, a lacrosse player chasing a loose ball, a family enjoying public skate, or a roller derby athlete preparing for competition.

Different sports. Different goals.

One community.

And that’s what summer at PSM Icehouse is all about.
