Coach Spotlight: Jared Lamothe

Assistant Hockey Director

At PSM Icehouse, player development goes beyond skill work. It is about helping players understand the game, make smarter decisions, and compete with purpose.

Jared Lamothe brings that mindset to every session, helping players develop both the technical and tactical side of hockey.

Through camps and development programs, Jared focuses on creating players who not only work hard, but think and react faster in game situations.

Built Through the Fort Wayne Hockey Path

Jared’s hockey journey followed a path familiar to many players growing up in Fort Wayne.

He developed locally through PSM Force Blue and Green teams before continuing into high school hockey, USPHL junior hockey with Islanders Hockey Club, and eventually playing four years of NCAA Division III hockey with Johnson & Wales University.

That experience across different levels of the game gives him a strong understanding of what players need at each stage of development and allows him to connect with players who are working toward similar goals.

Teaching Players to Think the Game

While skating skills are developed on the ice, many of the physical tools that support performance are built off the ice.

For Jared, coaching is about more than instruction. It is about helping players understand the game in a deeper way.

What he enjoys most is seeing growth happen over time and watching players develop individually while becoming stronger teammates.

His coaching style balances energy and expectations.

“I want players to be excited to come to the rink and have a good time, but there is still a job to be done.”

Players should enjoy coming to the rink, enjoy their teammates, and enjoy the process. At the same time, improvement requires focus, commitment, and a willingness to learn.

That balance creates an environment where players stay engaged while continuing to improve.

What Separates Good from Great

For Jared, one quality stands above everything else.

“Coachability.”

Players who are willing to listen, adapt, and stay disciplined are often the ones who continue improving over time.

Coachability creates opportunities for growth and allows players to maximize their potential both on and off the ice.

Developing More Than Skill

Jared believes one of the biggest advantages at PSM Icehouse is the commitment to complete player development.

Players are not only developing skills. They are learning how and why the game works.

That includes:

  • Hockey IQ
  • Tactical awareness
  • Positioning and timing
  • Reading plays under pressure
  • Decision making

Jared sees tactical development as an area often overlooked in youth hockey and something that can make a meaningful difference in player growth.

Developing Smarter Players

In addition to specialty camps, Jared works with players through youth hockey development clinics at PSM Icehouse, helping them build the skills and understanding needed to succeed in game situations.

His sessions focus on connecting skill development to game application, helping players understand not just how to execute a skill, but when and why to use it.

Whether working with newer players or experienced athletes, Jared helps players develop confidence, awareness, and the ability to make smart decisions under pressure.

Teaching the Defensive Side of the Game

One of Jared’s biggest goals is helping players understand the defensive side of hockey and how it applies to every position on the ice.

His philosophy is simple.

“Defense is not just for defensemen.”

Understanding positioning, pressure, support, and puck management helps every player become more effective regardless of position.

Whether a player is trying to create offense, win puck battles, or defend a lead, strong defensive habits help make the game easier and improve decision-making under pressure.

By helping players understand what is happening away from the puck and why situations develop the way they do, Jared teaches athletes to think the game at a deeper level and become more complete hockey players.

Why Icehouse Hockey Stands Out

For Jared, one quality stands above everything else.

“Coachability.”

Players who are willing to listen, adapt, and stay disciplined are often the ones who continue improving over time.

Coachability creates opportunities for growth and allows players to maximize their potential both on and off the ice.

Creating Memories and Giving Back

Summer hockey camps were some of Jared’s favorite memories growing up.

Now, he has the opportunity to help create those same experiences for the next generation of players.

“Hockey camps were some of my favorite times of the summer.”

For Jared, camps are about more than reps and drills. They are opportunities to develop players, build confidence, create friendships, and create memories players will remember long after the season ends.

What Players Can Expect on the Ice

Every session with Jared is designed to challenge players while keeping the game enjoyable.

“A fun practice that will not only force them to compete but to THINK!”

Players can expect:

  • Fast-paced practices
  • Competitive situations
  • Tactical learning
  • Game-like environments
  • Positive coaching

His goal is to help players become more confident and capable every time they step on the ice.

Moments That Stick

One of Jared’s favorite hockey memories came during his senior year of high school.

Scoring five goals in a State Championship remains one of those moments that reminds him how special the game can be.

Lessons That Carry Beyond Hockey

One lesson has stayed with Jared throughout his playing and coaching career.

“Get comfortable with the things you are uncomfortable with.”

Growth happens outside comfort zones, and that mindset continues to shape how he approaches development today.
